The Halal Management Division is one of the JAKIM divisions responsible for conducting halal certification in Malaysia in conjunction with the state Islamic Religious Department.
Halal certification began as early as 1965 by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS). The halal certification implemented by JAKIM began in 1974 when the Research Center, Islamic Affairs Division, JPM issued a halal certification letter for food and beverage products that met the requirements of Islamic law.
At that time, he was responsible for one of the bodies regulating halal product certificates in addition to the State Islamic Religious Department (JAIN) which also implemented halal certification with their respective logos.
In 1994, halal certification was given in the form of a certificate with the BAHEIS halal logo. In November 2002, the Islamic Food and Consumer Study Division, JAKIM was established and began operating on January 16, 2003 as a halal certification body with the aim of coordinating, issuing and monitoring the Halal Certification Certificate and enforcing all regulations related to halal in Malaysia.
Since then, the Government has determined that all halal certification activities are fully implemented by JAKIM through the Islamic Food and Use Study Division with the use of the new halal logo. On November 1, 2005, this section was renamed to the Halal Hub Division.
The passage of time has seen various changes taking place where halal certification issuance has been handed over to be handled by Halal Industry Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (HDC) in 2008. The halal certification business was subsequently reassigned to JAKIM on August 1, 2009.
On December 3, 2018, history again saw significant changes as the Halal Hub Division expanded to two (2) main divisions, the Malaysian Halal Council Secretariat (MHM) and the Halal Management Division (BPH). The Halal Management Division will manage the halal certification operations including the examination of product and premises certification application documents, product and premises auditing, halal certificate issuance, overseas slaughter house verification, halal monitoring and enforcement and halal analysis center.
As the authority responsible for matters pertaining to Islam in this country, JAKIM through the Halal Management Division, is the leading agency responsible for the certification and enforcement of halal status. In this context JAKIM has set a vision to become a credible and recognized halal certification service center nationally and internationally.
